The Tidewater Chapter of the American Fisheries Society held its 26th annual meeting March 8-10 in historic downtown Beaufort at the North Carolina Maritime Museum. With views of wild horses on the Rachel Carson Reserve and Taylor’s Creek, the habitat was perfect for us fishy folks! We had over 110 in attendance - a great crowd!

On Thursday afternoon we held the first continuing education class in Tidewater Chapter history. We considered this to be a success with more than 36 attendees! Laura Lee and Ray Mroch of the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries did a great job providing students and professionals great pointers on analyzing data sets and growth modeling. The poster social was robust with 27 poster presentations and awesome BBQ!

Friday’s schedule was completely full with over 36 oral presentations, representing universities and agencies from North Carolina, Virginia, and Maryland. This was followed by the business meeting where the chapter awards were given out to Dr. Chuck Manooch (Meritorious Service), Dr. Jeff Buckel (Excellence in Fisheries Education), and Mike Street (Conservation Award). Stephanie McInerny received a special Presidential Award for all of her hard work and effort in helping to organize the meeting. [See Awards, page 3 for a full list of award recipients.] Friday night’s social proved to be lively with another Tidewater Chapter first: a raffle, which was very successful! An after party at the Backstreet Pub featured musical guest Tobacco Roses. Presentations on Saturday finished off the meeting nicely.

I would like to thank all of our sponsors including North Carolina Sea Grant as well as everyone else who contributed to organizing and executing this year’s meeting. Many thanks and I look forward to seeing everyone in Maryland!
